What is the project aim?

The overall aim is to integrate art into the design of the new hospital. To achieve this, it is planned to commission sculptures, courtyards and other external areas, predominantly using existing artefacts. Internally, the aim is to produce large tapestries, painting and suspending prints from the ceiling.

What are the achievements?

An Arts Steering Committee was set up, with the Blackburn Local Authority Arts representative offering advice on integrating the local community. The trust has appointed an 'Artists in Residence' for one day a week to provide collate existing artefacts from around the hospital and to work with students from Manchester University to specially design suitable pieces of art.

Who and what benefits?

There are many benefits to integrating Arts into the healthcare setting both for staff, patients and visitors. Arts help to create a relaxing environment for everyone, and help to brighten up and add interest to the often plain hospital corridor walls.

Longer term benefits?

'Arts for Health' have been appointed to act as advisers to the committee to co-ordinate ideas and opportunities for fundraising, with the aim of raising £1m.

Future developments and plans?

Integrating Arts into the hospital opens to doors for further arts based activities in consultation with the trust and hospital staff.

What did it cost and how was it funded?

The trust is planning on raising £1m from local businesses, people and suppliers. Consort has contributed £25k towards this target and will offer support to the committee to raise further funds from trusts and grants.
